Kyoto in Half a Day: Keihan Gion-Shijo Station — Guide Don

Title: What Is a Private Full-Day Kyoto Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Fushimi Inari, Gion, and Kiyomizu-dera

On the morning of the tour, the guests contacted me via a messaging app to request changing the meeting point from their hotel to Fushimi Inari Taisha. Although the site was expected to be crowded, we stayed in close contact and met up successfully at Fushimi Inari Taisha. After a brief self-introduction and reconfirming the desired itinerary for the day, we began the tour.

Since the guests were a little hungry, we stopped at a convenience store in front of Fushimi Inari to buy and eat a light snack before starting the sightseeing. I explained the origins and history of Fushimi Inari, the fox worship tradition, the Senbon Torii, and the Omokaru-ishi stone, while also helping with the requested photos. Along the way, I asked about their previous visits to Tokyo and Hiroshima and answered related questions.

Next, since they wished to see the Gion area and the Yasaka Pagoda, we moved on. At Tatsumi Bridge, the cherry blossoms were in full bloom and beautiful, and they were very pleased when we took photos. I introduced the geiko and maiko culture on Hanamikoji, zazen meditation at Kennin-ji, and the tradition of severing bad ties at Yasui Konpiragu. We took photos for social media at the Koshin-do and commemorative photos in front of Hokan-ji as well.

In front of Kiyomizu-dera, they browsed for souvenirs, then entered the grounds, where I took time to guide them around the Kiyomizu stage and the main hall. Afterward, we passed through Sannenzaka, Maruyama Park, and Yasaka Shrine, and the tour came to an end.

Along the way, the guests asked many questions about Japanese history, culture, customs, and modern life. One especially memorable question was which region to visit next for a more authentic Japanese experience with fewer tourists, and I introduced areas along the Sea of Japan coast (for example, the Tottori Sand Dunes, the Tango region, and Maizuru).

The atmosphere was pleasant throughout, we were blessed with clear weather, and it became a very meaningful tour that conveyed a strong interest in Japanese culture. There were also many questions about food, and the conversation expanded to a wide range of topics, from ramen, tonkatsu, sukiyaki, and yakiniku to izakaya, sake, whisky, and bars.

One of them is currently studying international relations at a university in Tokyo, while the other is a high school student here in Kyoto.
