Tour Itinerary
- 1. 10:44 Meet up @ Kyoto Station Shinkansen arrival platform
- 2. 11:30-12:15 Visit Ginkaku-ji
- 3. 12:15-13:30 Stroll around the Philosopher's Path; Honen-in, Nanzen-ji
- 4. 13:45-14:15 Visit Heian Shrine
- 5. 14:45 Disband @ Nishiki Koji
Title: Can You Do a Private Day Trip from Tokyo to Kyoto? A Licensed Guide's Report
The guests were visitors from Europe on a private day trip from Tokyo to Kyoto. I proposed visiting Ginkakuji and the area around the Philosopher's Path, where crowds tend to be lighter, and even though it was a day trip to Kyoto, the guests agreed to the suggestion, and this became the itinerary for the day. The choice turned out to be a good one, as the guests very much appreciated the atmosphere and setting of Ginkakuji and Honen-in Temple. They recognized the difference between Tokyo and Kyoto, and said that on their next visit to Japan they would like to make a stay in Kyoto the main focus of their trip.
We used taxis along a route that would normally be walked entirely, taking short breaks here and there. We gave up on the originally planned Shinnyodo and Konkaikomyoji Temple, and visited Nanzenji Temple instead, but I believe the guests were very satisfied.

Great walking tour in Kyoto!
Shoji was a great guide around Kyoto. Even in the rain we were able to visit the shrines/temples we wanted to see. We wished we had started earlier as we would have linke to have seen other things off the beaten path. We ended in Gion and were able to walk around the area. Shoji brought a wealth of knowledge about the area and Japanese culture.

If you’re ever in Kyoto, you absolutely must take this tour — and if you’re lucky, you’ll have Mr. Shoji Ogawa as your guide. In just six hours, he managed to give us an incredibly rich and insightful experience. He didn’t just show us the historic, architectural, and cultural highlights of Kyoto — he also explained the complexities of modern Japan, including how the unique structure of Japanese society helped the country avoid colonization and achieve remarkable success despite limited natural resources. We had such a wonderful tour of Nara with our tour guide Shoji. He was very knowledgeable and taught us so much about Japanese history. He was extremely flexible and helped us create the best tour for us. We wouldn’t have had near the positive experience or seen as many locations if we had tried to do the tour on our own. I recommend this tour and guide to anyone wanting to experience Nara.
