What Is a Private Kumano Kodo Walking Tour from Kii-Tanabe Like? A Licensed Guide's Report
While traveling to Kii-Tanabe, I received a message from the guest asking how to buy limited express train tickets, and after I replied, they were able to purchase them without any trouble. [Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.)](https://www.j-g-a.org/) is one of Japan's largest networks of government-licensed, English-speaking private tour guides, serving all 47 prefectures.
When I was standing at Kii-Tanabe Station holding a welcome board, the guest approached me. Since the transfer time was short, we bought lunch at the station convenience store and headed straight to the bus stop. Because the bus ride was long, we spent the time talking about the places the guest had visited in Japan so far and the places they wanted to visit, as well as some of my own past guiding experiences. As there had been no time to buy breakfast before boarding the limited express train, the guest had a light meal on the bus.
We arrived at Hongu on schedule, transferred to another bus line, and continued to Fushiogami. It was already quite hot when we got off the bus, but we could see the Hatenashi mountain range in the distance, and we enjoyed that view as we walked for a little while. At Fushiogami-jaya, several groups of visitors were having lunch. Because of the tight schedule, we finished our meal quickly and resumed the walk. Since most of the path went through wooded areas, we did not feel the heat much. At the lookout point, I took photos with the large torii gate in the background. After that, we arrived at Hongu Taisha, made our visit, and I took photos of the guest in front of the torii gate at Oyunohara before we quickly boarded the return bus. After the long bus ride, when we went to buy the return limited express tickets, there happened to be a train bound for Osaka in just ten minutes, so we hurried to purchase the tickets, and there I said goodbye to the guest and ended the tour. The guest seemed to have taken great interest in the Kumano Kodo and said they would like to come again next year.

A great and manageable hike with Kiyoko!
This is a perfect 5 mile-hike for those who only can spend one day on the Kumano Kodo. Our guide was Kiyoko, and we chose to walk from Hosshinmon Oji to Hongu Taisha. Kiyoko was friendly and knowledgeable, and provided many explanations about the history of places we walked through and of the Oji shrines and monuments we passed on the way. The forest is magnificent. She made this hiking trip truly special with her kindness and her experience. Thank you Kiyoko!

The best way to experience the Kumano Kudo in one day
I booked a private tour of the Kumano Kudo trail due to having a short time (1 full day), wanting to avoid coordinating local bus schedules, and wanting to learn from a local person who also speaks English. Kiyoko was absolutely invaluable! She was organized, flexible, knowledgeable, and kind. She coordinated all of the transportation and points of interest while continually lending us a locals perspective and knowledge of these beautiful, historic places. 100% worth the money and I think truly the best way to experience the Kumano Kudo trail if you have a short time.

Kiyoko was amazing. We are very greatful for everything she did and prepared for us. She got in touch well in advance to make sure she could design an itinerary that was suited to our needs and desires, and boy! She did an outstanding job! We saw and experienced everything we wanted.
And about Kumano Kodo, well it is just breathtaking. We’ll come back to explore more of what it has to offer.
