From there the group visited Nomura Family Samurai Residence Ruins at 11:25, Oyama Shrine・Gyokusen'inmaru Garden at 12:00, Kanazawa Castle at 12:20, Kenrokuen Garden at 14:45, Kaga Honda Museum at 15:30, Higashi Chaya District (Shima) at 16:40 and Disperse at Higashi Chaya District at 17:00.
Travel between the sites was by public transport: Kenrokuen-shita to Korinbo by bus (210JPY); Korinbo to Kenrokuen-shita by bus (210JPY); Dewamachi to Hashibacho by bus (210JPY). Across 3 sections the fare came to 630JPY per person.
What Is a Private Kanazawa Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Samurai Culture and Japanese Swords
The guests were a group visiting from North America. I had heard beforehand that they were interested in samurai traditions and how Japanese swords are made.
After viewing the Nomura Family Samurai House, lunch was originally scheduled for 12:00, but since the guests had just eaten before leaving the hotel, they asked to move lunch to around 14:00, so I changed the lunch time. At Oyama Shrine, the guests took an interest in the ema votive plaques and other items, and after seeing the beautiful Gyokusen'inmaru Garden, we visited the Hishi Yagura turret at Kanazawa Castle. As fatigue set in from the heat, we headed to lunch. After enjoying sushi and a seafood rice bowl for lunch, we visited Kenrokuen Garden, and at the Kaga Honda Museum I explained the types of swords and how they are made, using photos I had brought with me. I guided them through the Shima teahouse in the Higashi Chaya District, and we parted ways there.
I believe the guests enjoyed every location this time. However, since lunch had been reserved in advance for 12:00 but the guests requested 14:00, the route ended up doubling back and forth, which created a little inefficiency. From next time, I would like to be able to handle lunch and similar arrangements more flexibly.

I majored in civil engineering at a college and am interested in historical infrastructures. I have also guided foreign people around Ishikawa Prefecture, Toyama Prefecture, Gifu Prefecture, and Fukui Prefecture as an international activity of an English circle. I was a volunteer interpreter at the training camp for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in 2021.
Hokuriku region has a lot of sightseeing spots as follows, beautiful landscapes like Kenrokuen Garden and Tateyama, tasty food like traditional Kaga dishes and fresh seafood from Toyama Bay, traditional crafts like Kaga Yuzen dyeing, Takaoka copperware, and Inami woodcarving. I introduce these spots and historical infra tourism such as Kurobe dam and industrial tourism.
I also work as a translator. I translated the Japanese firefly squid tourism pamphlet into English in 2020.

We had a wonderful time in Kanazawa with our guide, Shoten Sasaki. In 5 hours we covered Nagamachi, the samurai quarter; Lunch at Omicho Market; Oyama Shrine; Gyokusen’inmaru Garden; Kanazawa Castle; and Kenrokuen Gardens. Sho shared detailed knowledge at every stop, was kind and really focused on our having the best experience. We enjoyed our time in Kanazawa and highly recommend Sho for touring Kanazawa!

We had the pleasure of taking a tour around Kanazawa with Mr. Shoten Sasaki, and it was truly a memorable experience. Mr. Sasaki was incredibly kind, attentive, and always ready to answer our questions or accommodate our requests with great care and patience.
He guided us through the stunning Kenrokuen Garden and the historic Kanazawa Castle, where he shared fascinating insights and stories about their history. His deep knowledge and passion for the city made every stop even more special.
We also visited the charming geisha districts, the iconic gold leaf workshop—one of Kanazawa’s most symbolic places—and the museum of the city’s very first tea house. Thanks to Mr. Sasaki, we got to experience not just the sights, but also the soul of Kanazawa.
