What Does a Private Walking Tour of Kanazawa Look Like? A Licensed Guide's Report

The guests were visitors from Europe.

At the Nomura samurai residence, they enjoyed the traditional house, the beautiful garden, and the displays of crafts.

At Kenroku-en Garden, they enjoyed the autumn leaves that had just begun to turn and the calm scenery of Hisago Pond.

At Kanazawa Castle, they enjoyed the buildings constructed in traditional architectural styles. There was also a playful moment when they posed with a peace sign for a photo in front of the Ishikawa-mon Gate.

At the Higashi Chaya District, I gave an overview before we parted ways. After the tour, they mentioned that they planned to have seafood for lunch at Omicho Market.

A notable stop on the tour was Kenroku-en Garden. Kenroku-en is regarded as one of the three great landscape gardens of Japan, located in central Kanazawa. Originally developed as the outer garden of Kanazawa Castle by the ruling Maeda family over many generations, it features expansive ponds, flowing streams, teahouses, and carefully arranged trees that showcase the beauty of all four seasons. The name Kenroku-en refers to the six attributes considered essential to a perfect garden: spaciousness, seclusion, artifice, antiquity, water-courses, and scenic views.

I majored in civil engineering at a college and am interested in historical infrastructures. I have also guided foreign people around Ishikawa Prefecture, Toyama Prefecture, Gifu Prefecture, and Fukui Prefecture as an international activity of an English circle. I was a volunteer interpreter at the training camp for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in 2021.

Hokuriku region has a lot of sightseeing spots as follows, beautiful landscapes like Kenrokuen Garden and Tateyama, tasty food like traditional Kaga dishes and fresh seafood from Toyama Bay, traditional crafts like Kaga Yuzen dyeing, Takaoka copperware, and Inami woodcarving. I introduce these spots and historical infra tourism such as Kurobe dam and industrial tourism.

I also work as a translator. I translated the Japanese firefly squid tourism pamphlet into English in 2020.
