Title: What's a Private Kanazawa City Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report
The guests were visiting from North America. During their stay in Kanazawa, they wished to make a round of the main city sightseeing spots. After a pre-departure consultation, we decided on the order of visits and the destinations while listening to their wishes, aiming to fulfill their strong interest in castle tours, garden tours, and shopping. The beautiful castle walls of Kanazawa Castle Park, a Kutani ware shop, the Kazuemachi Chaya District, the Sakuda Gold Leaf shop, and the Nomura Family Samurai Residence seemed to be especially to their liking. At their particular request, I made a reservation for a gold leaf hands-on experience at Sakuda for the following day. Kenrokuen Garden also happened to be undergoing the yukitsuri work, a seasonal winter tradition, which made it a lucky day. Since I completely retired from my position at a railway company and started being involved in the tour guide interpreter business, I have experienced almost all types of guiding through FIT, Long Group Tours, Cruises (Shore Excursions), Incentive Tours, Special Interest Tours (Railway Travel, Pilgrimages), Familiarization Tours (Sales Promotion Tours) etc.
However, I noticed that I am not fully satisfied to only be a general guide who just manages a tour itinerary provided by tour agents/clients.
High-end guests have sometimes requested me to answer some enquiries that are actually challenging to answer for Japanese nationals. However, I appreciated those because they provided such a challenge and I felt that they wanted to understand my sense of beauty/values as a guide concerning a new culture for them.
Every time I host my guest I do my best to prepare the most appropriate information based on three travel elements (appetite, logistics, accommodation). Nevertheless, I decided to aim for higher guiding skills after I was motivated by senior guides whose guiding strategies and gestures were particularly impressive.

We had a fantastic day touring the highlights of Kyoto with our guide YOSHI and his driver. Yoshi was excellent at helping put together a plan prior to our arrival and everything worked to perfection. Our family of seven enjoyed a relaxed informative day of seeing and better understanding the amazing sights of Kyoto.

Our tour guide, Yoshi-san, a sweet and gentle elderly gentleman, was incredibly kind, patient, and deeply knowledgeable about the town. He brought us to a wonderful local ramen shop that we would never have found on our own, and shared the history of Takayama with such warmth and pride that it truly came alive for us. Through his stories and guidance, we were completely charmed by Takayama’s rich history and culture. Thank you so much Yoshi-san for making our trip so memorable!
