This private tour of Tokyo began at 9:00, when the guide met the guests at @ Prince Sakura Tower, and finished at 16:20. The day ran to 7 hours and 20 minutes from start to finish. It included lunch @ Tsuruhachi (soba restaurant) at 14:00.
From there the group visited Hokokuji Temple at 10:15, Kotokuin Great Buddha at 11:15, Hasedera Temple at 11:45, Dankazura, Wakamiya Oji at 12:45 and 5 Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine at 13:31.

The guests were a group visiting from Asia. This was their second trip to Japan; on the previous visit they had toured Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka, so this time they traveled through Tokyo, Nikko, Takayama, Shirakawa-go / Gokayama, Kanazawa, and Fukui, returning to Tokyo the day before today's Kamakura tour. Since they had already joined four tours with [Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.)](https://www.j-g-a.org/) and gathered information about Japan from other guides, today I focused my commentary on the history of the Kamakura period, particularly Kamakura Buddhism. They had visited Eiheiji on their own but did not seem to have heard any explanation there, so I also touched on the Soto Zen school. As they had visited Todaiji during their previous trip, I explained the Great Buddha of Kamakura in comparison with the Great Buddha of Nara. At Dankazura I explained the use of perspective, and we walked along Wakamiya-oji up to the shrine. Because I was serving as the final guide in a series of [Japan Guide Agency](https://www.j-g-a.org/) tours, there was no need to explain the general overview of Japan, which made things easier for me. Instead, I spoke about the politics, economy, history, and culture of Japan and the world, as well as the national character that underlies them and its strengths and weaknesses.

I spent 23 years working at a leading Japanese automotive company, including 7 years posted overseas. I then worked for a German premium automotive manufacturer for 13 years, followed by 6 years as an advisor to a British energy company. In addition to my regular duties, I often served as an interpreter for top executives during meetings with foreign government officials. I also had opportunities to introduce aspects of Japan—such as our national character and consumer preferences—to leadership teams in both the German and British companies.
As a tour guide, I’ve had the pleasure of guiding guests from a wide range of countries especially after the pandemic, including the US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Norway, Romania, Slovenia, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, India, Hong Kong, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Argentina, Columbia, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Laos, Turkey, Jordan, Kenya and Israel.

Hideki san was an amazing guide. He was incredibly knowledgable and easy to understand. While planning our time together he helped me understand the various areas things I wanted to see were in. He designed a great tour for us. We had a delicious fresh seafood lunch, and yummy Japanese treat. He even helped me interpret with shopkeepers and my fortunes from the temples. I cannot recommend him enough!

The Best Guide I Had in Japan
Hideki was, without question, my favorite guide during my month-long trip in Japan.
He is an amazing, kind, and genuinely thoughtful gentleman. Before guiding, he had a successful career at a major conglomerate in Tokyo, with experience in business development and marketing, and you can immediately tell that he brings a level of professionalism, perspective, and depth that goes far beyond a standard tour.
What makes Hideki special is that he does this because he truly enjoys it. He told me, “You can use ChatGPT to get all the history, but it’s my job to explain what it can’t.” That perfectly sums up the experience. He did not just point things out or recite facts. He added context, judgment, personality, and a real human understanding of Japan that you simply would not get from a guidebook or online search.
The morning of our tour, I told him I wanted to completely change the plan. Not only did he accept it, he took it as a challenge and immediately sprung into action. A few hours later, I was completely off the beaten path in a place that would never show up in travel guides or magazines. We ate locally, and it ended up being the best lunch I had in Tokyo. We walked around, bantered, explored, and had an amazing time.
Being with Hideki felt less like being on a tour and more like spending the day with an old friend or a fun uncle who happens to know Tokyo incredibly well. His knowledge, friendliness, calm demeanor, and willingness to go above and beyond made the day unforgettable.
I could not recommend Hideki more highly. If you book with him, you are lucky to have his time. Treat him well.

Tripadvisor review: Tokyo 6hr Private Tour with Government-Licensed Guide
Using the subway and minimizing time in the rain we saw many of the most important sites and experienced a variety of interesting and fun neighborhood cultures. We had lunch at a local gem for a fun meal of tempura and rice. Some of the sites were spectacular, all were worthwhile. Time and money well spent.

My wife and I had a great time being shown around the sights of Tokyo by our guide Hideki, walking and travelling on the transport network. We were able to learn about some of the history and culture of Japan. The whole day was thoroughly enjoyable and was a great experience. We can highly recommend the private tour with Hideki who was very knowledgeable and helpful and can tailor the tour to meet your interests.
