Title: What's a Private Day Trip to Hakone Like? A Licensed Guide's Report

The guests enjoyed an optional Hakone sightseeing tour prior to their cruise around Japan. Despite being greeted once again by rain, as had been the case for several days in a row, we traveled to Hakone by the Romancecar train. Perhaps the mountain scenery veiled in mist gave off an exotic atmosphere, as the guests took many photographs. A welcome highlight, unaffected by the rain, was the yosegi marquetry woodcraft presentation at a local workshop, which many other international visitors were also enjoying. At the Hakone Checkpoint, we soaked in the atmosphere of the Edo period, and we then set out to visit the cedar-lined avenue, but rainwater made walking difficult, so we gave up on that and switched to a stroll along the nearby path instead. On the boat and the ropeway, the mist was deep, but we exchanged jokes and had a pleasant time together. A notable stop on the tour was the Hakone Checkpoint, a reconstructed Edo-period barrier station on Lake Ashi. During the Edo period, it served as an important checkpoint along the Tokaido road, where travelers and goods were inspected as they moved to and from the capital. Today, visitors can walk through the restored guardhouses and gates and gain a vivid sense of travel and control under the Tokugawa shogunate.
