What Is a Rainy-Day Private Tour of Hakone Like? A Licensed Guide's Report

Despite light rain and heavy fog, the private tour of Hakone proceeded as planned along the Hakone stone-paved road and the cedar-lined avenue. The rolling fog actually created a wonderful atmosphere, and the guests stopped often to enjoy taking photos with the great cedar trees as a backdrop. The Hakone Sightseeing Cruise (Pirate Ship) was unable to depart from Moto-Hakone Port due to the thick fog, so I quickly changed the original plan and headed for Choanji Temple in Sengokuhara. Here too, in the light rain, the guests paused at the Five Hundred Rakan statues scattered throughout the woods, asking many eager questions about Japanese graves, and I sensed the guests' strong intellectual curiosity about religious culture. We finished the day by enjoying matcha in the tea house at Gora Park, making it a day rich in history and culture.
