Tour Itinerary in Detail
Meeting at hotel pick up at 8:50, the group explored Hokkaido until the tour ended at 15:20. The day ran to 6 hours and 30 minutes from start to finish.
The itinerary covered Goryokaku Tower at 9:40, Hakodate Magistrate's Office at 11:00, Mount Hakodate at 13:10, Motomachi stroll at 13:50 and Museum of Northern Peoples at 14:30.

The guest was an independent visitor from North America. They had clearly communicated the places they wanted to see in advance, which made it easy to plan the tour. The guest had a keen interest in Japanese history, particularly military history, so we visited the magistrate's office (Bugyosho), which had not originally been part of the plan. The guest was very pleased to see the cannons and rifles used in the Battle of Hakodate and asked many questions, which made for a lively conversation. Under a clear autumn blue sky, the guest was also very satisfied with the view from Mount Hakodate. Finally, at the Museum of Northern Peoples, the guest came into contact with Ainu culture and history and was fascinated by the Ainu tools. Although we walked a great deal, the guest was not particularly tired and remained energetic throughout. I took the guest to a restaurant in the Red Brick Warehouses, where we said our goodbyes.
A notable stop on the tour was Mount Hakodate. Mount Hakodate rises at the southern tip of the city and is famous for offering one of Japan's most celebrated night views, with the twinkling city lights spread between the sea on both sides creating a distinctive fan-like shape. Visitors can reach the summit by ropeway, bus, or car, and from the observation deck they can enjoy sweeping panoramic views of Hakodate and the surrounding bays. The mountain is also known for its natural scenery, walking trails, and the way its appearance changes with the seasons.

Akira was our tour guide and was great. We went to all the stops and he was flexible with us if wanted to take a taxi or stop and eat. I would recommend this tour, especially if you are stopping at a cruise port. He had lots of knowledge and you saw a lot in a small amount of time.

My guide Akira was knowledgeable, kind, patient, and understanding. He didn’t talk too much; rather, he let me ask questions so that he only spoke on topics of interest to me. He also allowed me to set the pace, and we covered a lot of ground in six hours, from the fish market to Mt. Tengu to a coffeehouse to even the Don Quijote discount store (at my request). Being a first-time visitor to Japan and Otaru, I could have never figured out how to manage the logistics and cover so much ground so efficiently. He coordinated bus travel and translated for me at shops. He was very conversant in Enlish on a number of subjects ranging from history to movies. A memorable day with a truly expert guide!
