The guests were visitors from Europe who had also enjoyed visiting a shrine and shopping along Sakaimachi Street near Otaru Port the previous day. This was essentially a first visit to Japan for the group, aside from a single trip to Tokyo more than fifty years ago. They had requested to visit Goryokaku Tower, and although their knowledge of Japan was very limited, they began to take great interest in the history and culture of Japan, Hokkaido, and Hakodate, asking many questions along the way. At Goryokaku Park, in front of the former magistrate's office, we were able to watch an iaido event, which they greatly enjoyed. As they had never visited a Japanese castle before, they mentioned they would like to go to a castle from the next port of call, Akita Port, if possible. They also loved Hakodate's famous salt ramen and purchased kombu for making dashi at the morning market. The weather was wonderful, the autumn foliage was beautiful, and the views were crystal clear, so they had a truly enjoyable time.
