What Is a Private History and Food Tour of Fukuoka and Hakata Like? A Licensed Guide's Report

The guests were very interested in history and culture, showing great curiosity about the history and geography of Fukuoka and Hakata, especially the exchanges with China and the Korean Peninsula, such as the envoys to Tang China and the Mongol invasions. At Nanzoin Temple, they were amazed by the size of the Buddha statue, and one of the guests felt a sense of familiarity with it. They had very high expectations for the meal, so at Yanagibashi we chose a long-established fish shop rather than a trendy popular spot, where they enjoyed sesame mackerel, rock oysters, sea bream chazuke (rice with tea), local sake, and even abalone that was not on the menu. Although it unfortunately rained at Ohori Park, they enjoyed the beautiful park and the view from the castle ruins. A notable stop on the tour was Nanzoin Temple. Nanzoin Temple is home to one of the largest bronze reclining Buddha statues in the world, stretching about 41 meters in length and weighing some 300 tons. The temple is located in Sasaguri, near Fukuoka, and is a popular destination for both pilgrims and visitors interested in Buddhist art and culture. The massive statue depicts the Buddha entering nirvana, and its impressive scale makes it one of the most memorable sights in the region.
