What Is a Private Day Tour of Himeji Castle Like? A Licensed Guide's Report

Today's guests were a group visiting Japan for the first time from Europe. After meeting at Himeji Station, they stored their luggage at a nearby facility and walked along Otemae Street toward Himeji Castle. Today's guests requested an explanation in a Q&A format rather than a lecture style, so we walked to Otemae Park while asking questions such as "Why was a castle needed in Himeji?" and "How would enemies attack this castle?" There was an antique market there, and the guests suddenly came to a halt. After browsing various items, they purchased things such as a Takayama Festival lacquerware book, an old kokeshi doll, a talisman doll, and an antique clock.

After taking more time than expected before entering, we finally reached Himeji Castle. Here too, I explained the defensive features of the castle in a Q&A format as we walked through the main keep and the Hyakken Corridor of the West Bailey. After that, we visited a teahouse for a short break, then Koko-en Garden, the facility, and Himeji Station, bringing the tour to a close. It turned out to be a tour that took more time than anticipated, but the guests were delighted. A notable stop on the tour was Himeji Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Japan's most celebrated original castles. Often called the "White Heron Castle" for its brilliant white exterior, it is renowned for its elegant appearance and sophisticated defensive design, including maze-like approaches and strategic gates. Its main keep is among the finest surviving examples of Japanese castle architecture.
