Title: What Can You See on a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour? A Licensed Guide's Report on Fushimi Inari, Tenryu-ji, and Kinkaku-ji

The guests today were a group of visitors from North America. One of them had been to Japan before, but since it had been about ten years and they were bringing friends along this time, they decided to hire a guide for sightseeing. First, to help them understand Shinto, I guided them to Fushimi Inari Taisha, where they saw the unique thousand torii gates of the Inari shrine and the rice paddies with ripening ears of rice, and I spoke about "rice" and the origins of Japanese culture. After Inari, we moved on to Tenryu-ji to shift the conversation to Buddhism. There I explained Buddhism, focusing especially on Zen Buddhism, including an explanation of seated meditation (zazen). The guests listened to my explanations with great interest. After the discussion of Zen Buddhism, I guided them through the famous bamboo grove, we had udon for lunch, and next I guided them to Ryoan-ji, which was a favorite of Steve Jobs, where I spoke about the dry landscape garden and Zen philosophy. After Ryoan-ji, we moved on to Kinkaku-ji, and I explained the golden reliquary hall, though this seemed a bit difficult to grasp. Finally, I guided them through Nishiki Market and the Teramachi shopping street before we parted ways. A notable stop on the tour was Kinkaku-ji, also known as the Golden Pavilion, one of Kyoto's most iconic landmarks. Originally built as a retirement villa for a shogun in the late 14th century, it was later converted into a Zen temple. Its top two floors are covered in gold leaf, and the pavilion is beautifully reflected in the pond before it, making it one of the most photographed sites in all of Japan.

After a rather long teaching experience at Japanese college, I converted my career about 6 years ago into working as a tour guide for the tourists visiting Japan.
As my career overseas, I’ve been in the UN and the Japanese Embassy, all in the USA, totaling more than 6 years.
And then I had made a big change in my career from a diplomat to an academic researcher. For that career to achieve, I studied abroad and won a doctorate degree in linguistics from Indiana University and landed a teaching position at college in Japan.
With all these interesting and exciting experiences I’ve made myself ready to enrich your tour and make it both enjoyable and worthwhile.
