What's a Private Kyoto Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Arashiyama and Kinkaku-ji

The guests were visitors from North America. They were traveling to Tokyo, Hakone, Kanazawa, Takayama, Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara, and also planned to visit another country in Asia, on a long trip. The itinerary and map that had been exchanged with the guests' travel agency had not actually reached the guests. The day before, they had reportedly visited the Higashiyama area, including Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Yasaka Shrine. Today, rather than focusing on the history and culture of Kyoto, the highlights were the green moss of Gio-ji Temple, the bamboo grove, the monkeys at the monkey park, and the gold of Kinkaku-ji. The guests were especially fond of the monkeys and spent a long time enjoying the monkey park.

A notable stop on the tour was Kinkaku-ji Temple in Kyoto. Kinkaku-ji, also known as the Golden Pavilion, is a Zen Buddhist temple whose top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf. Originally built in the late 14th century as a retirement villa for a shogun, it was later converted into a temple. The pavilion is set beside a reflecting pond and surrounded by a traditional Japanese garden, making it one of Kyoto's most iconic and frequently visited landmarks.
