Can You Do a Private Day Trip from Tokyo to Kyoto? A Licensed Guide's Report on Sanjusangendo, Nijo Castle, and Nishiki Market

The guests were a group visiting from North America, and it was their first time in Japan. They had booked a day-trip tour to Kyoto from Tokyo. I took them to Sanjusangendo, Nijo Castle, and Nishiki Market. One of the guests did not want to take off their shoes, so they chose not to enter the Ninomaru Palace at Nijo Castle. One of the guests did a lot of souvenir shopping at Nishiki Market, purchasing a chopstick set, pottery, and even socks. Shopping became the main focus of the tour. Some of the guests said they especially enjoyed Sanjusangendo, while one of the guests said they liked the wall paintings at Nijo Castle.

A notable stop on the tour was Sanjusangendo in Kyoto. Sanjusangendo is a Buddhist temple famous for its long wooden hall, which is the longest of its kind in Japan. The hall enshrines 1,001 statues of Kannon, the Buddhist deity of mercy, with a large seated central figure flanked by rows of standing statues. The temple was originally founded in the 12th century and is celebrated for both its architecture and its remarkable collection of statues, making it one of Kyoto's most impressive cultural sites.
