Tour Itinerary
- 10:30 Meet up at the hotel
- 11:00 View the Tokyo Station building from Kitte
- 11:30 View the streetscape and objects of Marunouchi Naka-dori
- 12:00 After passing in front of Kikyomon Gate via Miyuki-dori, view the Double Bridge and Sakuradamon Gate
- 12:40 Stroll around Ginza (including shopping at Ginza Mitsukoshi)
- 13:30 Lunch at Sushizanmai in Tsukiji Outer Market
- 14:30 Disband at the Kabukiza Theatre
Title: What's a Private Day Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on the Imperial Palace, Ginza, and Tsukiji
The guests were a very close group who came to Japan from Europe. They kept telling jokes and making me laugh throughout, which made for a lively tour. They had just arrived in Japan the night before the tour, and for this first day of sightseeing I planned the itinerary around their request to "first stroll around the Imperial Palace and the Ginza area to get a feel for the atmosphere of central Tokyo." I explained that the Tokyo Station building was designed by Kingo Tatsuno, who studied architecture under the British architect Josiah Conder, and that KITTE is the former Tokyo Central Post Office and that the postal system was adopted from Britain, which helped them understand the relationship between Britain and Japan during Japan's opening to the world. One of the guests joked with a smile while taking photos, saying, "I hope they learned from the British post office and don't have a sloppy postal system."
We walked from Miyuki-dori past Nijubashi Bridge to Sakuradamon Gate, where they viewed the vast grounds of the Imperial Palace and the turrets and gates that remain from Edo Castle, and they enjoyed how it differs in character from European royal palaces.
At the request of one of the guests who wanted to look at cosmetics in Ginza, I guided them to the cosmetics floor of Ginza Mitsukoshi. Since one of my relatives used to work in sales for a cosmetics company, I have heard many behind-the-scenes stories about department store cosmetics sales staff, and when I explained the cosmetics while sharing those stories, they were very pleased.
Finally, we extended our walk to the Tsukiji Outer Market, where they enjoyed a late lunch at Sushizanmai. They shared an omakase sushi set and a few thin rolls, and one of the guests, who loves Kirin Ichiban Shibori, enjoyed the draft version. Apparently they had only ever had the bottled Ichiban Shibori before, and they showed their biggest smile of the day.

We had a tour booked with Toru yesterday. He was extremely prompt and detailed with the meeting spot well in advance and he was precisely on time at 450 am to meet us at the designated site. He was fantastic! Very knowledgeable and easy to interact with. He took us to have sushi after the auction and then we took a bus to the outer Tsukiji market and we saw all the things that we typically like to explore at markets. Toru we would recommend as a superb guide, without reservation, and in the highest possible terms. Great morning!

Our travel date for this tour came during Silver Week so sites were definitely crowded, but our guide, Toru, created an itinerary that allowed us to see the places we wanted to experience in an enjoyable way. We had no problems communicating with Toru during the lead up to the trip and he was so considerate of our wishes. Toru also shared a wealth of information about Japan and the spots we visited. The personal attention on this tour was such a welcomed change from the packed bus tours we had been on with our cruise excursions and the cost wasn’t any different! Thank you, Toru, for a wonderful, enlightening experience in Tokyo!

Outstanding experience at the Toyosu tuna auction with Toru as our guide! From the start, Toru was incredibly clear with his instructions, making sure we arrived at exactly the right spots at the right times and giving us all the accurate details we needed to take part in the first-floor viewing lottery. As an English speaker, I really appreciated how easy he made the whole process — navigating the auction logistics on your own could be confusing, but Toru unlocked the full experience for us.
After the auction, we sat down for a sushi breakfast where we got to try every part of the tuna. It was hands down the best sushi I’ve ever had, and having Toru explain each piece as we went made it so much more than just a meal — it was a genuine education in tuna and how the market works. His knowledge of Toyosu (and Tsukiji, which we explored together afterward) was clearly deep and came from real passion for the subject.
Toru was kind, patient, and generous with his expertise the entire time. This tour ended up being the absolute highlight of our trip, and I can’t recommend him highly enough to anyone visiting Tokyo who wants a real, insider look at the tuna auction and market culture. Five stars, without hesitation.
