What Is a Private Day Trip from Tokyo to Kyoto Like? A Licensed Guide's Report

The guests were visitors from North America. It was a slightly hurried schedule since it was a day trip from Tokyo, but I eagerly showed them many different places. Apart from Fushimi Inari and Kiyomizu-dera, the sites were not so crowded. Neither of them did any shopping, and they took many photos with their phones. I had been told the arrival time and train number but received no contact, and after getting a messaging app notice that they had arrived, I looked around and found them right nearby. After the tour ended, they said they would return to Tokyo on the bullet train around 7:00 and were looking for somewhere to have dinner, so we said our goodbyes at Teramachi Shopping Street.

A notable stop on the tour was Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto. Kiyomizu-dera is one of Kyoto's most celebrated temples, founded in the late 8th century and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is famous for its large wooden stage that juts out from the main hall, offering sweeping views over the city and the surrounding hills, which are especially beautiful during the cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons. The temple's name, meaning "Pure Water Temple," comes from the Otowa Waterfall on its grounds, where visitors drink from three streams said to grant health, success, and love. The approach to the temple leads through the historic sloping streets of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, lined with traditional shops and teahouses, making it one of the most atmospheric places to experience old Kyoto.
