Title: What's a Private Hakone Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report

The guests were visitors from Europe. The scenery seemed quite different from their home surroundings, and it helped that Mount Fuji was briefly visible in part, so they took many landscape photographs. They were very curious about the black eggs and enjoyed eating them. At the rice bowl teahouse, they enjoyed Japanese food while listening to my talk about kanji characters, and finished everything on their plates. Being interested in Japanese culture, they listened attentively to talks about Shinto, Buddhism, the Emperor, and the shogun. They had heard of the marquetry woodwork before and were familiar with it, but upon seeing the real presentation they were thoroughly impressed and bought souvenirs.

A notable stop on the tour was Owakudani in Hakone. Owakudani is a volcanic valley created by the eruption of Mount Hakone thousands of years ago, and it is known for its active sulfur vents and hot springs. One of its most famous attractions is the black eggs, which are boiled in the naturally hot sulfuric spring water, turning their shells black. According to local tradition, eating one black egg is said to add seven years to one's life. On clear days, the area also offers scenic views of Mount Fuji, making it a popular stop for visitors touring the Hakone region.
