Title: What Is a Private Nakasendo Day Trip from Kyoto to Magome and Tsumago Like? A Licensed Guide's Report

The guests were visitors from Europe on a round-trip day tour from Kyoto. As it rained throughout the morning, they walked wearing the ponchos I had prepared and using their own umbrellas. Even so, they enjoyed themselves, stopping to take photos at key points along the way. Both of them walked quickly, so we arrived at Tsumago earlier than planned. They finished their lunch completely and seemed very satisfied. Since we had about an hour before the bus, we visited the souvenir shops and they did some shopping. After that, we had a pleasant chat over various topics at a cafe. Until the previous day, heavy rain had suspended the Chuo Line, and I had received a message of concern from the guests, but today it ran normally, so everything went smoothly. Although the weather was unfortunate, I believe they were satisfied.

A notable stop on the tour was Tsumago, one of the best-preserved post towns along the historic Nakasendo route that once connected Kyoto and Edo (present-day Tokyo). Tsumago is known for its beautifully maintained wooden buildings and traditional streetscape, where vehicles and modern signage are kept out of sight to preserve the Edo-period atmosphere. Together with the neighboring town of Magome, it offers visitors a chance to walk a scenic mountain trail and experience the feel of old Japan.

Gifu Prefecture, where I was born and raised, is located in the heart of Japan. It is home to many mountains exceeding 3,000 meters, and the historic Nakasendo (Samurai Road) runs through this dramatic landscape. Once a vital artery for travelers during the Edo period, the route still preserves the traditional atmosphere of that era, with many historical houses standing much as they did centuries ago. Walking along this path allows you to experience Japan’s original rural landscape—a distinct and refreshing contrast to the bustling former capitals of Kyoto and Nara.

I also spent many years working in Nagoya, so I can guide you through the city with confidence. Nagoya is a treasure trove of historical landmarks, such as Nagoya Castle and Atsuta Shrine. Furthermore, the city is famous for “Nagoya-meshi,” a variety of delicious local specialties unique to the region.

It is my great pleasure to introduce visitors to the depth of Japanese cuisine, history, and culture. Welcoming guests from all over the world is always a joy for me, and I truly look forward to guiding you and creating wonderful memories together.
