What Is a Private Cultural and History Tour in Japan Like? A Licensed Guide's Report
The guest was a person from North America, visiting Japan for the second time, who had previously stayed in Japan for a few months some years ago. The guest expressed a wish to learn in detail about Japanese history and culture, so I shared detailed explanations at each place we visited. During our travels, the guest also asked questions about politics and world affairs, and we discussed our respective viewpoints on various topics. I believe the guest was very pleased with our frank exchange of opinions. As with other guests, I am often asked about my perspective, both as a Japanese person and as an individual, on world affairs and similar matters. I was reminded once again that on tours where we spend a long time together, it is important not only to provide information one-sidedly as a guide, but also to engage in a two-way exchange of opinions.

Masami is a very good guide. Our 8 hour Tokyo tour covered a good blend of religion, history, modern culture and pop culture. He helped navigate the subway system and even secured two taxis when we were running short on time. We could not have covered Tokyo so extensively without him.

Much more than sightseeing — six hours that helped me understand Tokyo
An excellent six-hour private tour and one of the highlights of my time in Tokyo. What made it special was my guide, Masami, who didn’t simply take me from one famous sight to another. He helped me understand the stories, beliefs and contradictions behind what I was seeing.
We explored places including Tsukiji, Sensō-ji and Meiji Jingu, discussing everything from Shinto and Buddhist rituals to Tokyo’s wartime destruction and extraordinary rebuilding. I particularly enjoyed discovering how Sensō-ji’s traditional appearance incorporates modern materials such as concrete and titanium, and how the apparently ancient forest surrounding Meiji Jingu was deliberately planted just over a century ago and carefully nurtured until it became a largely self-sustaining ecosystem.
Masami was full of memorable smaller stories too: the memorials at Tsukiji acknowledging the fish and foods consumed there; the remembrance of old objects; the trees that survived the 1945 firebombing; and the poetry of Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. He also shared personal stories, these moments transformed history from dates and buildings into something human.
Travelling alone actually made the private tour especially rewarding. I could ask questions whenever something caught my curiosity, and Masami was happy to follow those threads rather than simply deliver a rehearsed commentary.
I came away feeling that I had not merely seen Tokyo, but had begun to read it — its layers of tradition, destruction, renewal, gratitude and modernity.
Six hours very well spent. Masami was an excellent guide, went above and beyond, and I would highly recommend the experience, particularly to curious travellers who want to understand the city rather than simply photograph it. Have a IC Card handy or Day travel Pass!!
