What Is a Private First-Day Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Asakusa and Asakusabashi
The guests were visitors from Oceania, and this was my guiding on their very first day in Japan. Since they had specified places, shops, and restaurants they wanted to visit, I arranged the itinerary accordingly. As I had mentioned in advance, they did not have cash on hand, so they withdrew some at a convenience store and purchased a PASMO card at the station. They took many photos at various spots. At a bead shop in Asakusabashi, they bought a large amount of beads, which they said they would use for designing a dress. As we had time to spare, we viewed the traditional houseboats in Asakusabashi and then visited a calligraphy shop, where they purchased notebook-style paper. They had made a reservation at a vegetarian restaurant, so I had intended to part ways, but they invited me to join them, so I did. The vegetarian sushi was beautiful and delicious, and it was a small but excellent restaurant. It was the first day of the Sanja Matsuri, so the crowds were even larger than usual, and we could not enter the main hall, but I think it was worthwhile that they were able to see the huge procession. They bought chopsticks and earrings as souvenirs, as well as an outlet adapter for a watch battery at an electronics store. I guided them to a washi paper-making shop they had reserved themselves, which concluded the tour. They mentioned they would also participate in an ukiyo-e woodblock printing experience on another day. There were many smiles, and they told me it was a very good tour.

Great day in Toyko
Four of us spent an enjoyable day touring Tokyo the day before our Japan cruise. Our guide, Takako, was great and ensured we saw what we wanted to see. Tokyo traffic is crazy but our driver, Mr. Isizuka, was amazing. Takako asked for our lunch preference and suggested a terrific steak house…so fun! She explained all the traditions and rituals at the shrine and temple so we felt at ease visiting these places. Because of traffic, we were running a little behind (no fault of hers or our driver) so we only got a drive through of the Ginza area. We will spend one more day in Tokyo at the end of the cruise and now have a better idea of where to concentrate our time. All in all, we had a great time, despite the rain.

Takako was the perfect guide; extremely articulate and knowledgeable, friendly, passionate about Japan and giving her customers the best experience in gaining knowledge of the area and covering so much in one day. She showed a great understanding of her customers’s needs and desires and went out of her way to make you feel comfortable. She had a great sense of humour which made the day so very delightful and enjoyable.

Takako, our guide for the day, was an absolutely wonderful companion in Tokyo. She took the time in advance to understand our interests and wishes, and the whole day was tailored exactly to what we wanted to see and experience.
My mother isn’t very steady on her feet and can’t walk long distances, and Takako handled this beautifully, she adjusted the pace and made sure my mother could fully enjoy the day without feeling rushed or left out. It’s reassuring to know that a tour like this can be adapted so well for someone with limited mobility.
Her knowledge, warmth and preparation made the day truly special. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide and can highly recommend her to anyone visiting Tokyo.
