Over the course of the day the route took in Otaru Museum Canal Building at 10:30, Otaru Canal at 12:30, Finance Museum (Former Bank of Japan Otaru Branch) at 13:30, Sumiyoshi Shrine at 14:20, Tanaka Sake Brewery at 15:00, Otaru Station at 15:45 and Sapporo Station dismissal at 16:40.
Travel between the sites was by public transport: Otaru to Minami-Otaru by train (210JPY); Minami-Otaru to Otaru by train (210JPY). Across 2 sections the fare came to 420JPY per person.

The guests were visitors from Asia. Although I am a guide based in Otaru, the guests were staying at a hotel in Sapporo, so we arranged to meet at Sapporo Station and take the train together to Otaru.
When I asked about their interests, they said they were not interested in shopping but were very keen on history and culture, so we decided to start at the Otaru Museum. They asked me many questions about Otaru and Hokkaido, which made guiding truly rewarding. This is exactly what makes being a guide so fulfilling.
We also visited Sumiyoshi Shrine and the Bank of Japan Otaru Museum, which were not originally on the plan, because they asked to go when we happened to pass by. Dozens of times they asked me to explain what the museum exhibits and signs said.
We walked quite a lot, but the guests showed no signs of fatigue and were very pleased with today's tour.

Akira was our tour guide and was great. We went to all the stops and he was flexible with us if wanted to take a taxi or stop and eat. I would recommend this tour, especially if you are stopping at a cruise port. He had lots of knowledge and you saw a lot in a small amount of time.

My guide Akira was knowledgeable, kind, patient, and understanding. He didn’t talk too much; rather, he let me ask questions so that he only spoke on topics of interest to me. He also allowed me to set the pace, and we covered a lot of ground in six hours, from the fish market to Mt. Tengu to a coffeehouse to even the Don Quijote discount store (at my request). Being a first-time visitor to Japan and Otaru, I could have never figured out how to manage the logistics and cover so much ground so efficiently. He coordinated bus travel and translated for me at shops. He was very conversant in Enlish on a number of subjects ranging from history to movies. A memorable day with a truly expert guide!
