What's a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Asakusa, Kappabashi, Tsukiji, and Roppongi

The guests were visiting Japan for the first time from North America. The day after the tour, they were scheduled to board a cruise ship departing from Yokohama for an approximately two-week journey around various parts of Japan. Some of the guests had relatives who frequently visit Japan, and they had received various pieces of advice from them and planned their itinerary accordingly.

At Sensoji Temple, before I even had a chance to explain, the guests spotted the omikuji fortune slips and showed interest, asking "What is that?" and decided to try them. Both drew a "kichi" (good fortune) and were delighted.

We strolled through Sumida Park, got into the car around Azumabashi Bridge, and got off near Tawaramachi Station in the Kappabashi Kitchen Town district. I had assumed they might be interested in kitchen knives and initially thought of guiding them to a well-known knife shop, but when I took them instead to a kitchenware store recommended by a friend, located just before it, they immediately purchased two knives. They bought a nakiri knife and a petty knife, along with a clever little tool that makes it easy to set a 15-degree angle when sharpening knives, and a whetstone.

At this point, they had completed everything they needed to buy in Kappabashi, but they continued to enjoy browsing various kitchen items and peeking into other knife shops, enjoying some window shopping. Finally, we took a commemorative photo with the giant chef's-face signboard object atop a landmark building in Kappabashi in the background.

Next, we headed to Tsukiji Market. They requested a sushi restaurant with seating where they could sit down, which was my recommendation, and since we could be seated without waiting, I guided them to a sushi restaurant this time. They enjoyed a tuna nigiri set, cucumber rolls, and more.

During that lunch conversation, I learned that although a friend had recommended Ginza, they were not particularly interested in shopping there. Since I had also heard at the morning departure that they wished to buy T-shirts at the Hard Rock Cafe, we took a quick look around Ginza and then headed to the Hard Rock Cafe in Roppongi. They were able to buy several of the T-shirts they wanted and were very satisfied. Furthermore, at the Don Quijote store right nearby, one of the guests who had wanted to buy Japanese okaki rice crackers found a large bag of kaki-no-tane and purchased it.

Although it was a little earlier than the scheduled end time, the guests said, "We've finished everything we wanted to see and do today, we're completely satisfied and are happy to return to the hotel now," so I saw them back to their hotel.
