What Is a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour in Winter Like? A Licensed Guide's Report

The guests were visiting Japan for the first time from South America. A travel agency was involved as an intermediary, but communication with the agency was quite difficult. In addition, although I contacted the guests directly after they arrived in Japan, separate information also came from the agency, so I had to coordinate with both parties, which was very time-consuming. Among the original itinerary items, the guests had already visited Kinkaku-ji on their own the previous day, which I learned about through the agency, and this kind of confusion continued until the end. The agency had booked a tea ceremony experience with a kimono, but it turned out to be only a happi coat worn over the guests' clothes rather than a full, authentic experience. Even so, the guests seemed to enjoy it. Snow had accumulated from the previous day, so I had to take great care while walking in the morning. In the afternoon the snow began to melt, so there were no problems. It would be helpful to know in advance, when accepting a tour, whether a travel agency is involved as an intermediary, though I wonder if that might reduce the number of guides willing to take it on.
