Meeting at Tobu Nikko Station at 10:10, the group explored Tochigi until the tour ended at 16:20. The day ran to 6 hours and 10 minutes from start to finish.

Title: Can You Do a Private Day Trip to Nikko When Train Tickets Aren't Booked? A Licensed Guide's Report
The guests were visitors from North America. Prior communication was handled through their travel agency. Correspondence had begun in April, but after a message saying they would contact me once the July train times were confirmed, there was a long gap. When I checked a few days before the tour about whether the train times had been decided, I was told that the guide in Tokyo the day before the tour would help with purchasing tickets, and that the guests themselves would contact me once tickets were bought. I was worried that buying tickets the day before during this busy season would be difficult, so I waited, but no message came. I reached out to the guests directly, still received no reply, and finally got through by messaging app on the night before the tour. In the end, however, the previous day's guide had not helped through to completion, and the tickets had not been purchased. Without a limited express ticket from Shinjuku, the only option was to come by local trains, which meant a longer journey, so I gave detailed guidance on how to transfer, which platforms to use, and which departures and destinations to take, and the guests managed to arrive safely in Nikko today. The return tickets were purchased at the ticket counter right after arrival. Looking back, I feel I should have followed up more persistently with the travel agency, and I was left wondering whether the previous day's guide and the agency had fully understood the situation. Today's guests were worried, saying that the tickets for their train to Lake Kawaguchi two days later had also not been secured and had been refunded by the agency, leaving them unbooked. Just in case, I recommended that they consult the agency or that day's guide themselves, and I gave them a written note in both English and Japanese describing possible routes, suggesting they could show it at the station ticket counter to check whether they could buy tickets there. Still, it was a delicate matter deciding how far I should get involved. I was reminded once again that Japan's transportation system can be extremely complex and difficult for visitors from abroad.
Since one of the guests enjoys nature and fishing, I showed more of the natural scenery in areas popular with anglers. The guests were very happy, saying it felt very peaceful.
One of the guests loved taking photographs and captured many different angles with several cameras.
Although there were many complications on the way to Nikko, in the end it was a very enjoyable and fulfilling day.

Great Guide Yumi Highlights Nikko on walking tour
Our 16,000 step tour of Nikko with our guide Yumi was informative, interesting and delightful. Yumi met us at the hotel on time despite a last minute change of venue. She adjusted the itinerary to accommodate the change and we visited the Emperor’s former summer residence (Tamozawa Imperial Villa) and gardens and then walked the Abyss, both good. A quick lunch at the nearby bakery turned into a history lesson about the origins of tourism in Nikko and the oldest hotel in the area. Interesting and unexpected.
We then walked to the world heritage Shrine and temple complex of Toshogu, Futarasan-Jinja and Rinno-Ji. Yumi’s pre-planning and pre-purchase of tickets saved us a 30min wait in line. And her folder of laminated fact sheets provided more details on things we were seeing. So we’ll organised.
We finished the tour with a walk down to the river to view a bridge and then a long uphill walk back to the hotel, via a Lawson Station to stock up on snacks after a busy tour.

Our guide, Yumi Aoyama, was warm, welcoming and highly knowledgeable. She answered every question even thought I’m a bit of a history buff. Her preparation for the tour with a folder of pictures and diagrams to illustrate a point was excellent and helped us understand things like what the five levels of pagodas represent. Overall, we felt like we were in good hands and she delivered good value for money. We highly recommend her and her tour.
