- 9:00 Meet @Guesthouse Raku
- 9:43-19:01 Jingu-Marutamachi→Kyoto 280 yen Keihan
- 10:00 Fushimi Inari Taisha sightseeing
- 11:15-11:24 Fushimi Inari→Gion-Shijo 220 yen Keihan
- 11:30-12:30 Lunch @Gion Bistro Marubashi
- 12:40-13:10 Stroll around Gion & Yasaka Shrine
- 13:20-14:40 Sannenzaka & Kiyomizu-dera sightseeing
- 15:00 Disband @Kiyomizuzaka (only the guests get in the taxi)
What Can You See on a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour of Higashiyama? A Licensed Guide's Report
The guests were a group visiting from North America who wanted to focus their sightseeing on the Higashiyama area. At Fushimi Inari and Yasaka Shrine, I explained Japanese Shinto. After having lunch at a bistro in Gion, we walked along the Shirakawa stream and strolled through the Gion area, heading down toward Hanamikoji while I talked about geiko and maiko. At Kiyomizu-dera, I explained Buddhism and wooden architecture. Since one of the guests was interested in samurai, we visited Nijo Castle, and since they had never eaten sushi before, I introduced them to Japanese-style conveyor-belt sushi at Sushiro and Kura Sushi so they could enjoy a truly local experience.

Andy(Atsushi) was great and communicated with us beforehand about our itinerary. He was flexible with changes we requested. Andy was very informative during the tour. He also was willing to take our family’s pictures. We were able to stop and check out shops as we pleased along the way. He also accommodated lunch requests(as our daughter has food allergies).
One thing I wish we realized was that there is quite a bit of walking. We were fine but for people who are perhaps older or with young children you may want to consider taking a cab between different sites.

Great tour!
Andy Murao was an amazing and wonderful tour guide. He reached out to us with some ideas for our private tour. He worked with us as we made the tour perfectly suited to our needs. He met us on time. He navigated the crowds and the sites perfectly. He was very knowledgeable and we learned a lot. He even put together a nice photo collection of photos he emailed us after. Highly recommend.
