What Is a Private Beppu Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Jigoku Steam Cooking and Sand Baths
The guests were visiting Japan for the first time as a memorial trip. For the jigoku-mushi (hell-steam cooking) experience, I initially considered a traditional facility for hot-spring cure visitors that accepts reservations, but taking the heat into account I switched to the Jigoku Mushi Kobo workshop. Since this place does not accept reservations, we visited just before noon and were able to use it with no waiting time. The guests were delighted, saying the mineral-rich dishes were delicious. It was an extremely hot and challenging day for touring the "hells" (jigoku), so we focused on the two most popular spots. For the sand bath, rather than using the municipal Takegawara Onsen, which cannot be reserved, we used Shonin Park near the pier, which had just opened in July. The guests seemed to thoroughly enjoy the sand bath and were pleased that it relieved the fatigue of their travels. They loved Beppu very much and said they would definitely visit again.
