What Is a Private Kyoto Day Tour Like for Guests Arriving by Cruise? A Licensed Guide's Report

The guests visited Japan for the first time, arriving by cruise ship. They currently live in North America. Both used walking canes. One of the guests could walk quite quickly even with a cane, while the other walked very slowly and found slopes difficult. At Fushimi Inari, we used the elevator to reach the entrance of the Senbon Torii. Some other visitors who did not really need the elevator rode it as well. Partly because of the heat, one of the guests waited at the entrance of the Senbon Torii. At the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, after about 150 meters from the entrance, they said, "This is far enough." One of the guests seemed to want to walk further but deferred to the other's wishes. At Kinkaku-ji as well, we turned back just before the Rikushu Pine. At the souvenir shop at Kinkaku-ji, one of the guests bought gifts for their grandchildren, while the other showed no interest in shopping at all. However, the final Gion area was included at the strong request of one of the guests, and here they walked with considerable energy. They also did some shopping. I even wondered whether they had been conserving their strength up until then in order to be able to walk around Gion. The photo was taken at the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove.

I was born and grew up in Kyoto and now live near Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto. I used to be a schoolteacher of English and welcome a lot of students from foreign countries. I really enjoyed showing them around Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Himeji, and Hiroshima. I have been a professional tour guide for about 8 years. I always try to let my guests learn Japanese traditional and modern culture. Since I was born in Kyoto, I know a lot about its culture and people. I myself enjoyed several sports, such as soccer, judo, and marathon when I was young. I’m much interested in baseball and sumo. My motto as a tour guide is to let my guests learn about our tradition and culture precisely and really enjoy themselves. I strongly hope you will enjoy the tour in Japan with me.
