Over the course of the day the route took in Park Hyatt Kyoto at 9:30, Ninen-zaka & Sannen-zaka, Kiyomizu-dera Temple at 9:30, Gion Shirakawa & Tatsumi Shrine at 10:10, Arashiyama Bamboo Grove Path at 11:00, Ginkaku-ji Temple, break at a nearby cafe at 11:55, Nijo Castle at 14:40 and Park Hyatt Kyoto at 15:30.

What Is a Full-Day Private Kyoto Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report

The guests were two friends visiting from North America. The itinerary was decided after discussion on the day and proceeded as follows: Hotel → Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka → Kiyomizu-dera → Gion Shirakawa → the Bamboo Grove Path in Arashiyama → Ginkaku-ji → lunch (at a restaurant) → Nijo Castle → Hotel. At each sightseeing spot they appeared composed, yet took many photographs. Throughout the tour, the guests asked questions constantly. Moreover, their questions went one or two steps deeper. For example, when I explained "the Japanese view of religion," they followed up by asking about "the differences in how each generation in Japan relates to religion." They praised the level of public safety and civic morality in Japanese society, while at other times the stagnation of the economy and society became a topic. Rather than stopping at these surface phenomena, they probed the underlying factors by asking why such things could occur, and then why that, and then why again. At the end, there was even a Zen-riddle-like exchange, as they asked, "What words would you want to leave for young people?" For me as a guide as well, it became a day that prompted me to reflect anew on what, over the course of a long history, has shaped the characteristics of the people and society of contemporary Japan.
