What Is a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour Like in Summer? A Licensed Guide's Report

Today was extremely hot and humid, making it a challenging day for sightseeing. The guests were a group from North America. They had visited Japan once about ten years ago, so this was a nostalgic return visit to Kyoto for them. When I guided them around Kinkaku-ji, they were a cheerful group and we enjoyed pleasant conversation. At Tenryu-ji, I explained the Japanese garden while they enjoyed the botanical scenery, and then we moved on to the bamboo grove, where they took many photos and created lots of memories. From the bamboo grove we moved on to Fushimi Inari Taisha, and although the weather was hot, they enjoyed drawing "omikuji" fortunes and walking through the Senbon Torii, taking many photos here as well. When we reached Fushimi Inari, the conversation turned to lunch, so I guided them to a soba restaurant, where they enjoyed a meal along with more conversation. After lunch, the guests wished to go shopping, so we parted ways at Teramachi Street. As the guide, I had injured my foot, so I feel I may have inconvenienced the guests, but I am grateful that it was a relaxed and pleasant day of sightseeing throughout.

After a rather long teaching experience at Japanese college, I converted my career about 6 years ago into working as a tour guide for the tourists visiting Japan.
As my career overseas, I’ve been in the UN and the Japanese Embassy, all in the USA, totaling more than 6 years.
And then I had made a big change in my career from a diplomat to an academic researcher. For that career to achieve, I studied abroad and won a doctorate degree in linguistics from Indiana University and landed a teaching position at college in Japan.
With all these interesting and exciting experiences I’ve made myself ready to enrich your tour and make it both enjoyable and worthwhile.
