Today I guided a group visiting from North America. We traveled by taxi from Ujina Port to Miyajimaguchi and visited Miyajima Island. Since the guests had already visited the Peace Memorial Museum and the Peace Memorial Park during a previous trip to Hiroshima, this time the tour focused solely on Miyajima.
First, I guided them to an exhibition room where a structural model of the Great Torii Gate is displayed, and I explained in detail the history and structure of the Great Torii Gate.
Next, I talked about the "carp," a symbol of Hiroshima. I introduced how Hiroshima Castle is also known as "Rijo" (Carp Castle), and how the professional baseball team "Hiroshima Toyo Carp" also derives its name from the carp. I also shared that the carp is a fish with strong vitality that can swim upstream even against rapid currents, and that in Chinese legend, a carp that climbs to the top of a waterfall is said to become a dragon.
At that point, one of the guests shared an interesting story with me. When they had once kept a carp at home, the carp jumped out of its tank. Believing it had died, they threw it into the trash. However, they later changed their mind and returned it to the tank, and remarkably, the carp came back to life and began swimming again. It was a truly memorable story that perfectly illustrated the extraordinary vitality of the carp.
The guests also mentioned that before coming to Hiroshima, they had stayed in Asia for four days. I was also able to hear a story about how a friend of the guests, who lives there, had donated a library to the local community.
