Meeting at lobby of Fairfield by Mariott. Board taxi at 10:00, the group explored Tochigi until the tour ended at 15:50. The day ran to 5 hours and 50 minutes from start to finish. It included lunch at Ryuzu Chaya at 12:20.
The itinerary covered Kegon Falls at 10:35, Yudaki Falls at 11:40, Lake Yunoko at 11:25, Walk Ryuzu Falls from top to bottom at 11:40, Rinnoji Temple Sanbutsudo at 13:40, Watch goma fire ritual at Rinnoji Temple Gomado at 14:05, Toshogu Shrine at 14:25 and Shinkyo Bridge at 15:35.
What Is a 6-Hour Private Nikko Tour by Taxi Like? A Licensed Guide's Report
[Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.)](https://www.j-g-a.org/) guide led a private tour of Nikko for a group visiting from North America. Some of the guests do not speak Japanese, and although the family has roots in the Hiroshima area, they were unsure whether any relatives remained there.
Because we used a taxi for six hours, we were able to travel very comfortably and flexibly. Inner Nikko is at its most beautiful in this season, and everywhere we looked there was fresh greenery along with a colorful variety of blossoms such as wild azaleas, Shiroyashio azaleas, Tougoku Mitsuba azaleas, Himeutsugi, and Zumi. Although the weather was cloudy, the guests were able to slowly enjoy the beautiful natural scenery.
One of the guests is studying architecture at university and was very interested in Japanese buildings. They seemed fascinated by the special structure of the five-story pagoda at Toshogu Shrine, whose central pillar does not touch the ground, and by the mechanism behind the "crying dragon" sound at the Yakushido Hall. They enthusiastically took many photographs.
They were a wonderful group with a very warm atmosphere, and I was able to enjoy the day together with them.

Our friendly guide, Yumi, Was an expert. She made every attempt to ensure our personalised tour was successful. We got to see everything we wanted and more.
We also had great food at a lovely little restaurant with a beautiful view.

Great Guide Yumi Highlights Nikko on walking tour
Our 16,000 step tour of Nikko with our guide Yumi was informative, interesting and delightful. Yumi met us at the hotel on time despite a last minute change of venue. She adjusted the itinerary to accommodate the change and we visited the Emperor’s former summer residence (Tamozawa Imperial Villa) and gardens and then walked the Abyss, both good. A quick lunch at the nearby bakery turned into a history lesson about the origins of tourism in Nikko and the oldest hotel in the area. Interesting and unexpected.
We then walked to the world heritage Shrine and temple complex of Toshogu, Futarasan-Jinja and Rinno-Ji. Yumi’s pre-planning and pre-purchase of tickets saved us a 30min wait in line. And her folder of laminated fact sheets provided more details on things we were seeing. So we’ll organised.
We finished the tour with a walk down to the river to view a bridge and then a long uphill walk back to the hotel, via a Lawson Station to stock up on snacks after a busy tour.

Our guide, Yumi Aoyama, was warm, welcoming and highly knowledgeable. She answered every question even thought I’m a bit of a history buff. Her preparation for the tour with a folder of pictures and diagrams to illustrate a point was excellent and helped us understand things like what the five levels of pagodas represent. Overall, we felt like we were in good hands and she delivered good value for money. We highly recommend her and her tour.
