Title: What Is a Private Miyajima and Hiroshima Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report
I guided a group visiting from North America.
At Miyajima, it was low tide during our visit, but the guests enjoyed taking photographs with the Great Torii Gate in the background.
At Itsukushima Shrine, I explained about omikuji fortune slips, telling them about the custom of tying a slip to a pine tree if you draw a very unlucky fortune. Because the word for "pine" (matsu) in Japanese sounds like the word "to wait" (matsu), the practice carries the wish that "bad luck will not follow you." The guests found this very interesting.
The guests also carried a goshuincho, a stamp book in which they collect vermilion seals from temples and shrines across various regions, and they received a goshuin seal at Itsukushima Shrine as well.
Afterward, I guided them through the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. I explained that immediately after the atomic bombing, many people had skin so severely burned that it hung down from their elbows, giving them a ghostlike appearance. Their faces were terribly swollen and so disfigured that they were unrecognizable, and they wandered desperately in search of water. As I explained while looking at the archival photographs, the guests listened very earnestly.
