Tour Itinerary in Detail
The tour started at 11:00 at Shinkansen platform of Kyoto Station and ended at 17:00. The day ran to 6 hours from start to finish. It included lunch (eat-in at the delicatessen in the basement of Takashimaya) at 13:15.
Over the course of the day the route took in Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine at 11:30, Sanjusangendo at 12:15, Nijo Castle at 14:10, Kinkaku-ji Temple at 15:05 and Arashiyama Bamboo Grove Path at 15:55.
Travel between the sites was by public transport: Kyoto to Inari by train (150JPY); Fushimi Inari to Gion-Shijo by train (220JPY); Kyoto-Kawaramachi to Karasuma by train (170JPY); Shijo to Nijojo-mae by subway (220JPY); Arashiyama to Randen-Tenjingawa by train (250JPY); Uzumasa-Tenjingawa to Karasuma-Oike by subway (260JPY). Across 6 sections the fare came to 1,420JPY per person.
# What's a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour from Osaka Like? A Licensed Guide's Report
The guests were visitors from Europe on a trip to Japan. Traveling from their accommodation in Osaka, we met at Kyoto Station at 11:00. Their wish was to see as many of Kyoto's famous attractions as possible while fitting in a quick lunch, so I arranged the following itinerary: Kyoto Station → Fushimi Inari → Sanjusangendo → lunch at the delicatessen in the basement of a department store → Nijo Castle → Kinkaku-ji → the Bamboo Grove path in Arashiyama → Kyoto Station. What left the strongest impression was Sanjusangendo, which had not been on the guests' original request list; they paused in awe at the solemn sight of the rows of Buddhist statues. Inside the hall, they also purchased a goshuin book and an English-language pamphlet. At Nijo Castle, they listened with great interest to explanations of how the expansion of Western powers into Asia influenced the return of political power to the Emperor. Along the way, our conversation ranged freely from how the guests first met, to the current state of overtourism, to differences between the railway situations in Japan and the UK (I explained the privatization of Japan's national railways and competition among private railway companies), and even to differences in healthcare systems. One especially memorable remark from the guests was their impression that no other country is culturally similar to Japan. They observed that in Europe, despite differences in language and ethnicity, deep historical exchanges — such as the Roman Empire extending its influence as far as the British Isles — have left behind similarities and shared traits. In contrast, they felt that Japan seemed not to belong to any other cultural sphere. At the end of the itinerary, we had planned to return to Kyoto Station, but the guests asked about having a distinctly Kyoto-style dinner in the downtown area, so I made a reservation at an izakaya I occasionally use and took them there, where we parted ways.

Masaki was our guide through Kyoto the day after we arrived. It was a wonderful experience, learning both about the culture and the hidden gems. He shared the details of each temple that he took us to, as well as took us through streets that showed the different styles of the Japanese culture the best part was that he was very communicative prior to and after our tour. He was so on top of everything that he made reservations at a specific restaurant during our tour, based on our interests, so that we do not waste time. It was an area that we would not be able to find on our own, obviously. He also changed some of the areas we were going to tour, based on our sons interest. That was actually the best part for our son, as he was able to experience archery.
The best part is that Masaki is so kind and considerate that there was a typhoon coming through Tokyo during our stay. He knew we were going to be traveling there after Kyoto and he made sure to update us with the train schedules and the storm details. We could not have asked for a better guide through Kyoto. I wish we could utilize his expertise in Tokyo…

Absolutely perfect for getting the most out of a single day in Kyoto. Masaki-san is an excellent tour guide. He communicated well by WhatsApp to set up our plans so we could see everything we wanted. He kindly adjusted our start time after our travel plans were delayed. He figured out the best way to adjust our tour when we spent too long admiring a few places! And he took us to the most amazing local type place for lunch. Overall it was beyond our expectations and we truly are grateful and thankful to Masaki-San for our truly perfect day!

Masaki was s wonderful and patient guide for our first visit to Kyoto. He explained the significance of the castle and temples we visited, pointing out parts he felt were most interesting. He also went out of his way to help us figure out our bullet train tickets for our return.
