Title: What's a Private Shizuoka Shore Excursion from Shimizu Port Like? A Licensed Guide's Report
The group was met promptly at Shimizu Port, and we walked the distance of two bus stops to reach Shin-Shimizu Station. As the guests said they had no trouble walking at all, the transit went smoothly. Since the customs currency exchange was not yet open, they exchanged money at a convenience store along the way. From Shin-Shizuoka Station, we passed through the shopping arcade and entered Sunpu Park via the Tomon Gate. I explained the Tomon Gate and the waterways, then we headed to Momijiyama Park, where the guests were moved by the cherry blossoms still in bloom, the pine trees, the murmuring of the small stream, and the landscape shaped to represent Mount Fuji and tea fields, and many photos were taken. The matcha service was very much enjoyed, and the view of the garden from the tea room was so moving that it brought tears. After that, on the bus from Shizuoka Station, we happened to meet another group of guests from the same country in Europe and had a pleasant conversation together as we arrived at the entrance of the Nihondaira Ropeway. At the Toshogu Shrine, one of the guests happily spotted a family crest that I had mentioned was reversed. Explaining as we went, we climbed up to the mausoleum of Lord Ieyasu, took many photos, and returned to Higashi-Shizuoka Station. As there was still plenty of time before the ship's departure, I guided them to the restaurant area at Shizuoka Station, where we said our goodbyes.

The only way to tour if you have mobility issues or want a freestyle itinerary set on your pace. Our driver Yusaku Abe was so extremely helpful and attentive. From loading and unloading the wheelchair to finding just the perfect spot to enter/exit the taxi safety. His vehicle was spotless and he was the best driver. After the first stop he felt like family and he had our best interest and safety at heart. He was a true pleasure. Our licensed guide interpreter Akahori Atsuko was number 1 from pick up at the port to drop off at the ship – a true blessing. She customized our itinerary to our interests and also mobility constraints. Every stop was as explained to us and we had ample time to view and see what we wanted. We even had time at the Shizuoka City Museum of Art to complex a hands on piece of Japanese art. Our favorite stop was the Mt Fuji World Heritage Centre and the close by temple and ponds. We ended the day at a local family restaurant for lunch and both Akahori and Yusaku made our day – we all had become family on this day. As we told them both – Aloha Nui Loa A Hui Hou!

Great Shizuoka Area Experience
We enjoyed a memorable day with Acchan, our guide! Although the weather was unfavorable and we did not get good views of Mt Fuji, we learned a lot about the history and the surrounding area. Perhaps our favorite part of the trip was lunch at a Japanese restaurant just talking and learning about the Japanese culture and language. We also toured the grounds and gardens at Sumpu Castle, ending our day with the best matcha ice cream. Thanks for a great tour, Acchan!
