Title: What Is a Private Day Trip from Tokyo to Nikko Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Kegon Falls and Toshogu Shrine
The guests were a group visiting from North America and South America. Despite the nearly three-hour one-way drive, they appeared to enjoy the scenery through the car windows and the conversation with the guide. They also seemed captivated by the overwhelming natural beauty during the sightseeing at Kegon Falls, which they reached after passing the sharp curves of the Irohazaka winding road, snowy scenery along the way, Lake Chuzenji, and Mount Nantai, and they took photos and videos to their hearts' content. Since they understood in advance that only about two and a half hours could be secured for the local stay, lunch was not at a restaurant. Instead, they bought light meals at the two shops in the plaza in front of the Kegon Falls elevator, and they happily enjoyed local dishes such as grilled salt-seasoned yamame trout, suiton dumpling soup, and yuba nuggets, calling them "delicious."
At Nikko Toshogu Shrine, taking advantage of the private vehicle plan, we accessed the site by the shortest route from the parking lot and I intended to guide them efficiently. However, partly due to the crowds, the 60 minutes I had originally planned was far from enough, and even moving at a brisk pace through the stone torii, the five-story pagoda, the front gate, the three sacred storehouses, the sacred stable, the bronze torii, the Yomeimon Gate, the portable shrine house, the Karamon Gate, the sacred dance hall, the inner shrine, and the Yakushido Hall, it took 1 hour and 20 minutes.
After the tour was decided, I had confirmed by email with the overseas travel agency that handled the guests' booking that it was an 8-hour tour scheduled to start at 9:00 and end at 17:00, and it was agreed that this would be shared with the guests. However, when I sent a greeting to the guests via a messaging app the day before, they indicated a different understanding, asking, "Isn't it a 9:30 start?" When I informed them, along with the itinerary, that this had been confirmed with the local travel agency, they were satisfied with the 9:00 start as scheduled. This experience made me keenly aware that even when the itinerary has been finalized through repeated exchanges with a local travel agency rather than directly with the guests, it is important to also thoroughly confirm details with the guests in advance.
This time, since it was before the peak season in Nikko, there were no major traffic jams on the roads. However, given that the one-way trip takes nearly three hours, an 8-hour tour allows only about two and a half hours for local sightseeing, and even rushing through two sites, in reality it ends up taking around nine hours from departure to returning to the hotel. Because this increases the burden on both the driver and the guide (in the sense that it is difficult to bill for an extension after already rushing through at least two sites), I would like to request that future tours be set to a minimum of 9 hours, and ideally 10 hours, with an increase in compensation to be considered.

We had such a special and memorable day—our experience with Tatsu exceeded all expectations. Tatsu’s warmth, knowledge, and friendliness created a truly welcoming and enriching atmosphere from start to finish.
We learned so much about Japanese culture in a way that was both meaningful and accessible, and the entire day felt relaxed yet deeply engaging.
One of the highlights was a visit to Choan-ji Temple, a peaceful spot off the beaten path. There were no tourists—just local families visiting the graves on the grounds for the spring equinox. We even had the chance to meet the head monk. The temple is home to over 200 unique Buddha statues (and growing), each with its own character. It was incredibly special and serene, and something we would never have found on our own.Afterward, we shared stories with others from our business group who also visited Hakone that day—and they were genuinely jealous of the experience we had!
Thank you again for making our time in Japan so personal and unforgettable. We’ll be talking about this day for a long time to come.

We had an amazing day in Hakone thanks to Tatsu, our fantastic guide! From the moment we met, he was friendly, organized, and incredibly knowledgeable about the area’s history, nature, and cultural spots.
Tatsu helped us navigate the Hakone loop effortlessly, including the ropeway, Lake Ashi cruise, and even timed our visit to open air museum perfectly to avoid the crowds.
Tatsu also bought for us some black eggs to extend our lifetimes. It felt like a truly authentic experience.
Highly recommended if you want to make the most of Hakone without any stress. Worth every yen!
