What Is a Private Kyoto Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report

The guests were visiting Japan for the first time and currently live in North America. This was the first time since I began working as a tour guide that guests arrived at the meeting point wearing traditional Japanese kimono. Since they had gone to the trouble of wearing kimono, I took plenty of photos for them. They asked many questions, so the tour took longer than expected. Also, because one of the guests wanted to buy cold medicine and we stopped at a pharmacy along the way, we were unable to go inside Nanzen-ji at the end. However, I guided them around the temple's main gate and the aqueduct and took many photos. After that, as the time to return the kimono was approaching, we took a taxi, but the traffic was very heavy and it looked like we might be late, so I called the shop to confirm that no extension fee would be charged, which pleased the guests. The tour ended in front of the rental shop. I was amazed by the number of people on the Philosopher's Path and at Ginkaku-ji. There were about ten times as many people as usual.
