Title: What Is a Private Hiroshima and Miyajima Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report

I guided a group visiting from Oceania around Hiroshima and Miyajima. One of the guests was very interested in history and, before visiting Hiroshima, had visited Mount Koya and studied Kobo Daishi in great detail. Because of this, when I spoke about Daisho-in Temple on Miyajima, the guest listened with great interest to the explanation that Kobo Daishi founded it, that the fire he used 1,200 years ago still burns to this day, and that this flame has been passed on to the "Flame of Peace" in the Peace Memorial Park. This guest also knew that Miyajima is one of the "Three Views of Japan," and I was amazed by the depth of that knowledge.

I also received questions such as "Why is vermilion used at shrines?" and "What is the raw material for it?" Since I could not answer right away, I looked it up on the internet together with the guests. Vermilion has been considered a color that wards off evil since ancient times, and its raw material is a mineral called cinnabar, which contains mercury sulfide. However, out of consideration for the environment, we learned that synthetic pigments are used today. Through this exchange, I myself learned a great deal.

Overall, the group was highly knowledgeable, and they viewed the explanations at the museum with great enthusiasm.
