What's a Private Family-Friendly Tokyo Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Zojoji, Tokyo Tower, Tsukiji, Asakusa, and Harajuku

The guests were a group visiting from North America. They arrived in Tokyo after visiting relatives in Asia, so there were no jet lag issues. One of the guests had visited Japan long ago and wanted to enjoy exploring Tokyo anew. At Zojoji Temple, where preparations for the New Year were underway, I was able to explain the New Year's Eve bell ringing and the first shrine visit of the year in a vivid, immersive way. At the request of the guests, we went up to the main deck of Tokyo Tower. We were able to look up at the majestic figure of Mount Fuji, and the guests excitedly took on the challenge of walking over the look-down window. At Tsukiji, before entering a sushi restaurant, they enjoyed sampling several sweets as street food. The guests each tried a skewer of strawberries and muscat grapes coated in hardened sugar syrup, but struggled with the hardness of the candy coating, so in the end another member of the group bit the sugar coating in half before they began eating. Watching them work so hard to eat while struggling was very endearing. At the sushi restaurant we entered, the wait after ordering became long, so we ended up finishing with only part of the order, but while waiting we practiced how to use chopsticks and chatted about many things, which helped me grow closer to the guests. Later, in the second half of the tour, as we walked, the guests held my hand while walking, which was very sweet. In Asakusa, the whole group was impressed by how delicious the mitarashi dango was. On the Ginza subway line heading from Asakusa to Meiji-Jingumae, the guests, understandably tired from all the walking, dozed off. In Harajuku, due to time constraints we did not go to Meiji Shrine, but on Takeshita Street, which the guests had wished to visit, they fully enjoyed the fun and lively atmosphere, including a mini pig cafe. They planned to go to a cat cafe after the tour, so we said goodbye in front of Harakado. On New Year's Eve, they planned to attend a countdown party at a hotel where friends visiting from overseas at the same time were staying, and the next day they planned to travel by car to visit the Jigokudani Monkey Park in Nagano Prefecture, followed by a few days of skiing.
