What Is a 5-Hour Private Shibuya, Meiji Shrine, and Harajuku Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report

The guests requested that the tour end around 15:00 in Shibuya, so we shortened the planned finish time by one hour from 16:00, and started the tour as a 5-hour itinerary ending with a farewell in Shibuya. For the guests, who came from Asia, I took time to carefully explain the excellence of shrine architecture techniques at Meiji Shrine, along with the environmental background and the geographical and cultural factors behind it. In contrast, on Takeshita Street they thoroughly enjoyed exploring the subculture, shopping, and street food. On Omotesando as well, they took a liking to Japanese-made sneakers and purchased a pair. Since we had spent more time shopping than planned, I let them know that our stay in Asakusa would be considerably shortened. They decided they could visit Asakusa the following day, so we skipped Asakusa (we had originally planned to go there and had purchased a free pass) and chose to have a leisurely lunch in Shibuya instead. They had hoped for Japanese-style curry, but ironically only an authentic Indian curry restaurant was open. As a solution, although it was a little far, I suggested a Kanazawa specialty pork cutlet curry, and they seemed very satisfied. It was wonderful to see the guests enjoy Japanese curry.

Born and raised in Tokyo a half-century ago, I have lived in Tokyo all my life except for one year in the UK to study for a master’s course. I am a Tokyo Native with viewpoints based on broader local knowledge than anyone else. I have specialised in Japanese history, culture, and architecture since I was an architect.
