Kyoto in Half a Day: Fushimi Inari — Guide Don

What Does a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour of Fushimi Inari and Kiyomizu-dera Look Like? A Licensed Guide's Report

On the day of the tour, the guests requested a schedule change shortly beforehand, so we accommodated this by delaying the start of the tour by 30 minutes.

First, I welcomed the guests in the hotel lobby and introduced myself as their guide. In a relaxed atmosphere, I checked the weather and how the guests were feeling that day, and after proposing an itinerary, we decided to visit Fushimi Inari Taisha, Ninenzaka, Sannenzaka, Hokan-ji (Yasaka Pagoda), and Kiyomizu-dera.

The tour used public transportation such as the subway and buses to move efficiently. At the first destination, Fushimi Inari Taisha, we strolled through the Senbon Torii, a path lined with rows of red torii gates, and the guests thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful scenery. The guests were also interested in purchasing a torii and bought a small one as a memento. We also stopped by the shopping street in front of the shrine, where the guests purchased fortune cookies at a rice cracker shop, and there was a lively moment when we read the fortunes inside together.

Next, we moved to Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka, strolling through the charming stone-paved streets. While enjoying the distinctive shops, I introduced unique establishments that are characteristic of tourist areas along the way, such as a specialty pickled plum shop and a Starbucks in a traditional Japanese-style house. After that, we passed by Hokan-ji (Yasaka Pagoda) and made our way to Kiyomizu-dera.

At Kiyomizu-dera, the guests viewed the magnificent scenery from the Kiyomizu Stage and were very surprised by its height. They also listened attentively to my explanation of the historical background, and told me, "We are so glad we could see this view in person."

After touring Kiyomizu-dera, we walked to Kodai-ji, Maruyama Park, and Yasaka Shrine. At Kodai-ji, the guests enjoyed the tranquility of the garden, and at Maruyama Park they enjoyed the spacious surroundings. At Yasaka Shrine, I explained Japan's shrine culture, and the guests seemed interested in the sightseeing right up to the end.

After the tour ended, we said goodbye with smiles and the words "Let's meet again." The atmosphere was relaxed throughout, the guests seemed satisfied, and it was a very fulfilling day for me as a guide.

Outside of work, I value time with my family. I have a wonderful wife and two daughters. One of them is currently studying international relations at a university in Tokyo, while the other is a high school student here in Kyoto.
