Title: What's a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Arashiyama, Ryoan-ji, and Fushimi Inari
I met the guests at the Hotel on time as scheduled and began the tour with a self-introduction. Despite it being our first meeting, they greeted me with warm smiles, and the tour started in a friendly atmosphere. In addition to the sightseeing spots we had confirmed in advance, I explained that I would flexibly adjust the itinerary while asking about their preferences on the day.
After departing the Hotel by private car, the guests requested a good cup of coffee (a latte). Working together with the driver, we searched for a well-regarded café, but by coincidence many shops were closed for their regular Thursday holiday, so we could not fully meet their request. However, the driver's earnest effort to search around was actually well received, and the guests said they were happy that someone would look so hard for them. There was constant laughter, and the mood of the tour became even brighter.
For our first destination, I guided them to the Arashiyama Monkey Park. They were amazed by the many monkeys in the park, exclaiming that it was more than they had imagined, and they were delighted. They were eager to take photos, and it became a time filled with natural smiles. Afterwards, they finally enjoyed their long-awaited coffee at a café in Arashiyama. They savored the warm drinks and the beautiful scenery, appearing very relaxed.
Next, I guided them to the Bamboo Grove path and Tenryu-ji Temple, and they were moved by the scenery that conveyed the changing of the seasons. While carefully confirming their preferences, I suggested a casual beef bowl restaurant for lunch, and everyone enjoyed cheese beef bowls. The relaxed atmosphere of the meal seemed to be a nice accent to the trip.
In the afternoon, I guided them to Ryoan-ji Temple and explained the beauty and historical background of the Japanese garden. They seemed particularly impressed by the tranquil space of the tsukubai and the rock garden, as well as the modest beauty of the wabisuke camellia, and they purchased souvenirs at the shop. They shared that the calm atmosphere of Ryoan-ji left a very deep impression on them.
As time was limited, I guided them to Fushimi Inari Taisha as the final destination. They were moved by the scenery of the rows of red torii gates and said they would definitely like to visit again. The private car service ended at Fushimi Inari, after which I guided them around the grounds together on foot.
Throughout the day, it was a tour full of smiles, and the guests thanked me, saying it had been a very good day. I felt glad not only to have met their expectations but also to have been able to provide enjoyable memories.

Hello! I’m Don, a Kyoto native with 20 years of experience in Vancouver’s travel industry. Now back in Japan, I work as a tour guide interpreter, sharing my love for Kyoto and the Kansai region with visitors from around the world. I use visual aids and storytelling to make each experience both engaging and informative, and I’m always exploring new places to deepen my local knowledge.
In Kyoto, I often guide guests through iconic sites like Nijo Castle, Fushimi Inari Shrine, the Bamboo Forest in Arashiyama, and Tenryu-ji Temple. We may also visit Nara Park and Todai-ji Temple in nearby Nara. In Osaka, popular stops include Osaka Castle, the vibrant streets of Dotonbori, and the historic Tsutenkaku Tower. For those interested in Japanese pop culture, I can introduce you to Maid Cafes, the Manga Museum, Crane Game Centers, the Pokémon Center, and karaoke spots.
I also offer a taste of local life by taking guests to a variety of dining experiences — from high-end wagyu restaurants to casual izakayas and ramen shops. If you’re interested, I can accompany male clients to traditional onsen or sento baths and, in the evenings, to piano bars and other nightlife venues.
Outside of work, I value time with my family. I have a wonderful wife and two daughters. One of them is currently studying international relations at a university in Tokyo, while the other is a high school student here in Kyoto. Family life is very important to me, and I believe that warmth and connection are key, not only in family but also in travel.
Whether you’re here to see the famous sights or to experience the everyday life of Kansai, I’d be honoured to be your guide. Let’s make unforgettable memories together!

Our guide, Takeshi Don Tanaka, worked with us to choose the most important and compact temple, shrine, and castle for our Kyoto visit He is knowledgeable and passionate about Japanese history and culture. Tour of “security system” of Niko-Jo castle (nearly every architectural element a weapon of psychological warfare) a highlight of trip. Also great sense of humor.

Wow, our guide, Don Tanaka was absolutely incredible. He knows so much about Japan and Kyoto. He made our tour fun and intellectual. He showed us so many places and hidden spots. Our driver Yasu was also a pleasure. Thank you to both! This was a highlight of our 2 week trip!
