What Is a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Nijo Castle, the Imperial Palace, and Kinkaku-ji

The guests were visitors from North America. The meeting time was around 9:30, but before departure there was a small mishap in which the cap of a water bottle one of the guests was carrying was not properly closed, soaking a bag and clothing, which delayed our start. Before coming to Japan, the guests had traveled through Cambodia and Vietnam, and had only just arrived in Japan the previous day. Since they did not have a transit IC card, we purchased tickets or paid in cash each time we traveled.

Because it was the end of the year, the Ninomaru Palace at Nijo Castle was closed, so we were only able to view the Ninomaru Garden. After strolling through the Kyoto Imperial Palace, one of the guests seemed to feel slightly faint, so we rested for a while in a waiting room. At Kinkaku-ji, although it was sunny, it rained intermittently, and the folding umbrellas I had prepared came in handy. At Kinkaku-ji, the guests sampled wasabi peanuts from Mamemasa, and appearing to like them very much, they purchased four bags. After exploring Kinkaku-ji, the guests said they wanted to have lunch near their accommodation, so I looked for eateries around the Higashiyama-Sanjo area, but at that in-between hour many places were closed. A café called Hebaragi was open, so I took them there and we parted ways.
