When Guests Want to See Nara Palace Site: A Licensed Guide's Private Tour Report

The guests were visiting from Asia. Their request was that they very much wanted to see the Nara Palace Site (Heijo Palace Site), hoping it might give them an image of what the ancient capital of Chang'an was like. However, I once again confirmed that the Nara Palace Site is vast and open, and that none of its structures leave a strong impression, which makes it a difficult place to guide.

The guests taught me that, much like the Japanese, people from their region tend not to worry too much about distinctions between different religions and will pray at any place of worship. It may well be that this relaxed attitude toward religion was a major reason why, by the time Buddhism reached Japan, it had already absorbed various elements from other faiths. Incidentally, one of the guests is Christian and the other has no particular religion.

We were able to talk about topics that I cannot usually cover in a standard tour, such as the story of the envoys to Tang China, the figure of Abe no Nakamaro, and how Sun Yat-sen disliked Chinese clothing (which was in fact the attire of the Manchu of the Qing dynasty) and preferred Japanese clothing (Sun Yat-sen learned in Japan that "wafuku = gofuku = old Chinese clothing"). It was a very enjoyable tour.

Hello! Thank you for choosing Nara! I bet you’ll love Nara. I specialize in Nara because Nara is the unique place where in one day you can cover the history and religions of Japan from the ancient times to the post war era while enjoying rambling in the UNESCO World Heritage park, having communication with lovely deer, surrounded with the beautiful nature.
I grew up in Nara, went university in Kyoto, enjoyed teaching at high schools and a university in Osaka. The three former capitals of Japan are home to me.
After retiring from teaching I began guiding so that I can meet various people from various corners of the world with a variety of cultures and backgrounds. Each time I guide, I find it hugely rewarding because I learn a lot from my guests sharing the history, culture and all that I know about Nara, Kyoto and Osaka.
I used to be a marathon runner, mountain climber and skier though I am not much of them anymore.
What I especially recommend is to stay in Nara a couple of days and enjoy communicating with friendly deer while visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Nara in early morning, temples and shrines at night are well worth experiencing.
