What Is a Private Himeji Castle and Kokoen Garden Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report

Today's guests were a group visiting Japan from Oceania. One of the guests was visiting Japan for the second time, while the other members were in Japan for the first time, having arrived in Osaka only the day before. Although they all came from Oceania, their places of birth varied, including Asia, Europe, and Oceania.

The meeting point for today was planned to be in front of the central ticket gate at Himeji Station, but the guests had arrived in Himeji earlier than the scheduled meeting time and did not come to the planned meeting point, so I contacted them and we met at a different location.

After meeting, I explained the overview of Himeji Castle at Castle View, and we headed toward the castle. As today's group was large and included both older and younger members, walking speeds varied, and it took some time overall.

Within the inner moat of Himeji Castle, we visited the ongoing "Chrysanthemum Exhibition" and the "old west great pillar" as we made our way toward the castle. When it became clear that the interior of the main keep of Himeji Castle has a seven-story structure accessible only by stairs, one of the guests decided to wait outside rather than enter the castle. For this reason, I guided the remaining guests through the castle, explaining its exterior and interior structure, defensive features, and the story of Princess Sen.

Next, at Kokoen Garden, we toured the garden while also making use of a wheelchair. However, instead of visiting the originally planned "rooftop of Egret Himeji," the guests said they "wanted to eat at a restaurant where locals go," so I took them to a restaurant near Himeji Station and ended the tour there. Large-group tours can sometimes lack cohesion, but today the group came together reasonably well, and the guests seemed pleased.
