- 11:00 Meet up @ Four Seasons at Otemachi
- 11:15 Confirm the schedule in the lobby on the 39th floor of the hotel, take a virtual tour of the geography of the western side of Tokyo and the Imperial Palace from the sky, then depart
- 11:50 Asakusa (Kaminarimon ~ Nakamise ~ Sensoji Temple ~ Asakusa Shrine)
- 13:30 Shinjuku Gyoen
- 15:00 Meiji Shrine ~ Takeshita Street
- 16:45 Shibuya (Hachiko, Scramble Crossing)

What Is a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Asakusa, Meiji Shrine, Harajuku, and Shibuya
The guests were a group of five visiting from Europe. They had arrived at their hotel in the early hours of the same day after coming from another city in Asia and were feeling somewhat tired, though they seemed accustomed to the heat. As discussed before their arrival in Japan, we adopted the itinerary described above, including viewing the Imperial Palace from the 39th floor of the hotel. At the Nakamise shopping street in Asakusa, they eagerly tried various Japanese foods, and at Senso-ji Temple they also purchased a charm, but since they had no cash on hand, I paid on their behalf. The fact that cash is still often necessary in Japan has not yet become widely understood. At the Gyoen garden, the eldest member of the group, who had been tired, took a great liking to the garden, regained energy, and enthusiastically took many photos. At Meiji Shrine, we were lucky to see a procession for a Shinto wedding ceremony. The crowds in Asakusa had eased somewhat, but the group seemed overwhelmed by the number of people in Harajuku and Shibuya. By the time we went from the Gyoen garden to Meiji Shrine they were understandably tired, and one of the guests requested a taxi, which we used. However, when traveling as a group of five, two taxis are needed, which made things difficult from a guide's perspective. In the future, when the number of guests is large, I think it would be advisable to suggest using a minivan.

Hello! My name is Hideki Maruyama. I was born in Osaka and raised in the Greater Tokyo area. I obtained my National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter Certificate in February 2016.
I spent 23 years working at a leading Japanese automotive company, including 7 years posted overseas. I then worked for a German premium automotive manufacturer for 13 years, followed by 6 years as an advisor to a British energy company. Through these roles at global corporations, I developed and refined key skills such as:
1. Cross-cultural communication
2. A deep understanding of business elites and affluent customers
3. The ability to deliver impactful and impressive presentations in English
In addition to my regular duties, I often served as an interpreter for top executives during meetings with foreign government officials. I also had opportunities to introduce aspects of Japan—such as our national character and consumer preferences—to leadership teams in both the German and British companies.
As a tour guide, I’ve had the pleasure of guiding guests from a wide range of countries especially after the pandemic, including the US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Norway, Romania, Slovenia, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, India, Hong Kong, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Argentina, Columbia, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Laos, Turkey, Jordan, Kenya and Israel.
When guiding, I always keep in mind to go beyond what guests can find on social media or ChatGPT. I believe my professional background allows me to offer unique insights, and I am encouraged when guests mention this in their reviews

Hideki san was an amazing guide. He was incredibly knowledgable and easy to understand. While planning our time together he helped me understand the various areas things I wanted to see were in. He designed a great tour for us. We had a delicious fresh seafood lunch, and yummy Japanese treat. He even helped me interpret with shopkeepers and my fortunes from the temples. I cannot recommend him enough!

The Best Guide I Had in Japan
Hideki was, without question, my favorite guide during my month-long trip in Japan.
He is an amazing, kind, and genuinely thoughtful gentleman. Before guiding, he had a successful career at a major conglomerate in Tokyo, with experience in business development and marketing, and you can immediately tell that he brings a level of professionalism, perspective, and depth that goes far beyond a standard tour.
What makes Hideki special is that he does this because he truly enjoys it. He told me, “You can use ChatGPT to get all the history, but it’s my job to explain what it can’t.” That perfectly sums up the experience. He did not just point things out or recite facts. He added context, judgment, personality, and a real human understanding of Japan that you simply would not get from a guidebook or online search.
The morning of our tour, I told him I wanted to completely change the plan. Not only did he accept it, he took it as a challenge and immediately sprung into action. A few hours later, I was completely off the beaten path in a place that would never show up in travel guides or magazines. We ate locally, and it ended up being the best lunch I had in Tokyo. We walked around, bantered, explored, and had an amazing time.
Being with Hideki felt less like being on a tour and more like spending the day with an old friend or a fun uncle who happens to know Tokyo incredibly well. His knowledge, friendliness, calm demeanor, and willingness to go above and beyond made the day unforgettable.
I could not recommend Hideki more highly. If you book with him, you are lucky to have his time. Treat him well.

Tripadvisor review: Tokyo 6hr Private Tour with Government-Licensed Guide
Using the subway and minimizing time in the rain we saw many of the most important sites and experienced a variety of interesting and fun neighborhood cultures. We had lunch at a local gem for a fun meal of tempura and rice. Some of the sites were spectacular, all were worthwhile. Time and money well spent.

My wife and I had a great time being shown around the sights of Tokyo by our guide Hideki, walking and travelling on the transport network. We were able to learn about some of the history and culture of Japan. The whole day was thoroughly enjoyable and was a great experience.
