What Is a Private Hiroshima Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report
The leader of the group had lived in Japan long ago and was very fluent in Japanese. The guests were very earnest and listened attentively to my explanations. In particular, when one of the guests viewed an exhibit about the many people who had been exposed to radiation from nuclear testing in North America, they reflected, "I used to work in that field, so I saw many such patients." At the end, the guests said they wanted to try a special Hiroshima dish, so I introduced them to an okonomiyaki restaurant. Finally, the leader told me, "There is no tipping custom in Japan, but there is in North America, so I would like to give you a five-yen coin as a tip. This carries the meaning of 'a good connection,' and I would like to introduce travelers coming to Hiroshima in the future." I felt they knew Japan through and through, though it left me with somewhat mixed feelings.
